Grief & Loss

Linda Corlett - Bereavement Counselling and Psychotherapy - Gorey, Co. WexfordGrief is a natural response to loss, and while the pain of grief can be a complex and overwhelming emotion, it is a normal part of the healing process. Although the experience of grief is unique to each individual, there are common symptoms and coping strategies that can help you navigate this difficult time, including bereavement counselling.

Symptoms of Grief

Grief is a complex emotion that can manifest in various ways, including:

Emotional: Sadness, anger, guilt, fear, loneliness or numbness
Physical: Fatigue, changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, or physical aches and pains
Cognitive: Difficulty concentrating, memory problems, or feeling overwhelmed
Behavioural: Withdrawal from social activities, substance abuse, or reckless behaviour

Coping with Grief

The grief process is unique to each individual and can vary in intensity and duration. There is no “right” way to grieve. Some common stages of grief include:

  • Denial: Refusing to believe that the loss has occurred.
  • Anger: Expressing anger or resentment towards others or the situation.
  • Bargaining: Trying to negotiate with a higher power to change the outcome.
  • Depression: Feeling sadness, hopelessness, and emptiness.
  • Acceptance: Coming to terms with the loss and finding a way to move forward.

When dealing with grief, it is important to acknowledge and express your emotions, even if they are painful. It may help to talk to friends, family, or a therapist about your feelings, and joining a grief support group can also be helpful. Self-care activities like physical exercise, healthy eating, getting enough sleep and spending time with loved ones are very important.

With the help of a trained therapist, you can learn mindfulness techniques, which can help you focus on the present moment and manage distressing emotions. It can also be helpful to honour your loved one by finding meaningful ways to remember and celebrate their life.
